Final Fantasy VIII - Abilities / Skills / Learning / Mastering

Category: Final Fantasy 8

Abilities can be learned by GF's and junctioned to characters to prove effective in battle and/or out of battle. Some abilities do need need to be junctioned as they automatically become active as soon as a guardian force learns it.

About
Each GF already comes with a number of basic abilities when you obtain it. It also has a certain pool of abilities it can learn. The abilities a GF has learnt are marked in white and have the word "Complete" written beside it. To learn abilities select the one you want and click learn. Basically you will gain AP in battles and once you have the total amount of AP that ability needs, you have learnt it. Some abilities will only show up once you have learnt others. Visit the In-Depth Page to see what each ability leads to next.

Learning...
It is best to manually learn abilities rather than letting the game learn them automatically for you. For example after learning a particular ability after a battle, the game will randomly choose another to learn, which could result in you not being able to learn another etc. After a battle pay attention to the dialogue box that appears telling you what GF has learnt what. After the battle then go to the GF pages and set the next ability to learn.

Each GF can learn a maximum of 22 abilities, when your GF's space is full, no more abilities can be learnt unless you make that GF forget an ability. This can be done by the item: Amnesia Greens which can be purchased at most Pet Shops. Abilities to lose are quite easy to choose. For example free up space by removing a few of the GF's Magic, Draw abilities for different characters. If you have learnt Enc-None with Diablos, then Enc-Half isn't really necessary, so you can delete that. You get the picture.

Abilities That Need To Be Junctioned
Command Abilities
These allow the character to use a certain command during battle when it is his/her turn. Make a choice what abilities to use, as a character can only junction a maximum of 3. Draw and Magic are essentials when you first set out on your journey. When you come to a halt near the end of the game, and you have most magic's in your stock, draw becomes less useful. I recommend changing it with Decent abilities such as Revive (learnt from Pandemona and Alexander) and Recover (Leviathan)

Character Abilities
These abilities provide and aid a character giving him/her special skills or improved statistics. Stat Abilities have a cumulative effect. If a character junctions Vit+20% as well as Vit+40%, overall he will have Vit+60%. Another few abilities that can prove useful are ones like Initiative and Auto-Protect, Auto-Reflect, Auto-shell and Auto-Haste.

Party Abilities
Party abilities can prove very useful, these as the name suggests helps your entire party. Abilities such as Enc-None protect the part from random battles and ones like Move-Find will allow you to see hidden draw points and Save points.

Abilities That Do Not Need To Be Junctioned
GF Abilities
These help your Guardian Forces in many ways from improving their statistics to helping tem create a more powerful attack in battle such as boost. GF abilities usually increase it's HP and magic attack.

Junction Abilities
These are abilities that become available to each character as the GF learns them. They are abilities such as HP-J, Str-J, Abilityx3, St-Def-J. The ability itself does not need to be junctioned but instead opens up possibilities which you can use or what will help you. Abilityx3 is useful, it allows a character to junction 3 abilities rather than two on the ability window, which is below the command window with magic, draw etc.

Menu Abilities
These appear in the abilities heading on the main menu. It will open up possibilities to shop from the main menu and customize cards etc. Basically it is a backdoor to a town allowing a character to Mod cards into items or even trade items for better ones. Also abilities like Sell-High increase the price in normal shops in which your items sell at. Haggle in the other hand decreases the price in shops, so you don't have to spend as much Gil.

Bonus Abilities
Bonus abilities are very useful as you level up. Try to increase your characters statistics permanently by junctioning bonus abilities such as Str Bonus. Basically every time you gain a level the parameter of that stat/ability will increase by 1 extra point. So if you think that you get the ability when you are level 30. You have 70 more points that can be added to that stat if you keep the ability junctioned as you level up to lv100 (max).

Gain quick AP
To gain quick and easy AP, it is best to go to Cactuar Island, using the Ragnarok on Disc 3. Try and defeat the cactuars which each give 20 AP. If you manage to defeat 4 in the battle, that's 80 AP for your Guardian Forces.
