have arrived in Junon. You stop outside a building guarded by two Junon army
men.
Reno
reports in to Veld.]
Reno
We’ve reached the hotel.
Veld
Head for the President’s
quarters immediately. He’s waiting there.
Reno
Yes, sir. Right away, sir.
[You head into the hotel with
Reno.
There are guards at strategic posts along the corridors.
Reno
speaks with one of the guards.]
Reno
Keep up the good work.
Guard
The President’s waiting for
you.
[The guard moves out of the
way, allowing you and
Reno
to enter. You stop to speak with the guard.]
Player
If anything happens, let us
know.
Guard
Leave it to me, ma’am.
[AVALANCHE arrives outside
the hotel. There are two of them. One of them is an AVALANCHE regular. Another
is wearing a dusty reddish orange outfit – he’s a special. You have not met this
type of member yet.]
AVALANCHE
Down with the Shin-Ra!
[The AVALANCHE Special takes
out one of the guards.]
Guard A
Urrrrrgh!
Guard B
Who the hell are you?!
[The second guard gets taken
out in much the same fashion.]
AVALANCHE
Down with the Shin-Ra!
[AVALANCHE reinforcements
arrive outside the hotel. The first AVALANCHE man, obviously the squad leader,
speaks to them.]
AVALANCHE
President Shin-Ra should be
in this hotel somewhere. Find him and kill him. We’re going!
[They move in.
Cut scene to the President’s
room.]
Reno
We’ll be looking out for you
from here, sir.
President Shinra
Veld sent you, did he? That’s
good thinking on his part.
[A guard comes running into
the room.]
Guard
AVALANCHE is he-
[A fireball hits the guard
from behind and incinerates him.]
President Shinra
What was that just now?!
Reno
It’s all right, Mr.
President. We’ll protect you.
[The red garbed AVALANCHE
special enters the room.]
Player
Wha-!
AVALANCHE Special
I’ve found you, President.
Player
As if I’d let you!
[FIGHT: AVALANCHE Special

The Specials use Quake
attacks and close range punches.]
Reno
They’ve managed to get past
the security guards. They’re well organized, aren’t they?
President Shinra
Are these the renegades from
Midgar? How dare they… (1)
[A video screen in the room
sounds. Veld appears on screen.]
Veld
Sir, are you all right?
President Shinra
Oh it’s you, Veld. I’m fine.
Veld
Sir, AVALANCHE is after you.
I really think you should put off the inspection. If you proceed with your
original plans, you’ll make it easier for AVALANCHE to carry out their
objectives.
President Shinra
No! We’ll continue with the
inspection as planned – we’ve got to show [the public] that we’re not affected
by a snivelling band of miscreants. (2)
Veld
Then, Mr. President,
please have a look at this.
[The screen cuts and we
see surveillance camera footage of AVALANCHE in various parts of the hotel.]
Veld
This is what we’ve
gotten from the hotel’s security cameras. As you can see, a large number of them
have already infiltrated the building.
[More camera footage.
We cut back to the President’s room.]
Reno
What the hell is this?!
The place is crawling with AVALANCHE!
Veld
This is the reality of
the situation. Do you understand now, Mr. President?
President
Shinra
Veld, do something
about it.
Veld
Very well. Please wait
a moment. I’ve sent additional reinforcements to the hotel entrance.
Reno,
you stay there and guard the President. Rosalind, you’ll sweep the hotel and
take care of any of the AVALANCHE members that you find.
Yes, sir. I’ll get
right on it.
President
Shinra
Hurry. I’m behind
schedule and I have a lot of things I need to get done today.
[You are now given
control and must search the hotel for AVALANCHE. You leave the President’s room
and head turn right. At the end of the corridor, there are two rooms. You enter
one of them.]
AVALANCHE
A Turk?! Where is the
President? If you tell me, I’ll spare your life.
Don’t even try that
with me.
[FIGHT: AVALANCHE [x1]
You head for the other
room and fight another man.
FIGHT: AVALANCHE [x1]
You head up the stairs.
Two AVALANCHE members coming in from the opposite direction spot you.]
AVALANCHE A
Get her! We’ll get
information about the President from her!
AVALANCHE B
Down with the Shin-Ra!
[FIGHT: AVALANCHE [x2]
You head down the right hand
side corridor and inspect of one the rooms. There is nobody there.]
Player
(Thought) There’s nobody
here…
[An AVALANCHE member
rushes in.]
AVALANCHE
Where’s President Shinra?!
Player
You’re not getting anywhere
near the President!
[FIGHT: AVALANCHE [x1]]
Player
(Thought) That’s all of them.
[You head back to the
President’s room. You hear
Reno’s
voice coming down the hall.]
Reno
W-wa-wait! Wait a minute,
sir!
President Shinra
I’ve waited enough. We’re
going.
[They come into view.]
Reno
Oi! Rookie! What’s your
status?
Player
I’ve swept the hotel. We’re
clear.
Reno
(Whistles)
President Shinra
Get ready. We’re leaving
right now.
Player
Understood.
[You run ahead to the
entrance. President Shinra follows, and
Reno
brings up the rear.]
[End of Chapter 2.1. You may
now continue, or save your game at this point and return to the main menu.]
[Outside the Junon hotel. A
larger complement of guards has now been posted outside and inside the hotel, as
per Veld’s instructions. You,
Reno
and President Shinra stand outside by the entrance.]
President Shinra
We’ll hold our news
conference in the Junon branch office’s press room. Gentlemen (3), I’m counting
on you to watch my back.
Player
Yes, sir.
[You begin to move off. An
AVALANCHE member sticks his head out from a third story window.]
AVALANCHE
President Shinra! Remember
this!
[He tosses a bomb down onto
the street. It sunders the road apart. There is now a sizable gap in the road.
You, President Shinra and two guards are on one side;
Reno
and the remaining guards are on the other.]
President Shinra
!!
Player
Sir, are you all right?
President Shinra
Yes… there’s no problem. But
– they… the road –
Reno
Hey, rookie! I’ll take
care of the guy up there. You make sure the president gets to the press room
safely.
Understood.
Reno
This’ll be finished in
no time.
I’ll look after the
President.
[Reno
and the soldiers on his side of the split road head into the building. The PHS
rings.]
Veld
Every time the
President gets attacked, he weakens. The President’s HP will be displayed with a
blue bar on the upper right hand corner of your screen. Make sure that gauge
doesn’t reach zero. As long as you stay close to the President, you shouldn’t
have any problems in protecting him.
Understood, sir.
[You begin walking down
the street. Before long, a voice calls out.]
AVALANCHE
He’s here! Come on!
[Two AVALANCHE men come
out of the building you just passed.]
President
Shinra
!! Do something!
Quickly!
[FIGHT: AVALANCHE
[x1,2] (4)
You continue walking
again. Two more AVALANCHE members accost you from another building.]
Mr. President!!
President
Shinra
Kill them!
[The guards that are
with you fight with the AVALANCHE members. You run in front of the guards and
take them on. President Shinra backs away to a safe spot.

AVALANCHE
I found him! Get over
here!
[More AVALANCHE men
come swarming out of the building you just past – right where President Shinra
is standing! You have to race to get to them before they can do him any harm.]
President
Shinra
You there! They’re over
here!
[FIGHT: AVALANCHE [x1,
2]
President
Shinra
(Speaking to you) You
there, be more careful next time. (To everyone) We’ve lost precious time. We’re
moving on.
Yes, Mr. President.
[President Shinra and
the guards begin moving ahead. You run to catch up with them. As you meet up
with them, a gunshot rings out. One of the guards falls over, dead.]
A sniper?!
[The guard and
President Shinra move into a defensive position. The guard waves his rifle at
the building, gesturing at you to go inside.]
President
Shinra
Damn it! You! Take care
of that worthless insect. I won’t feel at all safe until he’s dealt with.
Yes, sir. Please be
careful while I’m gone.
[You run into the
building. You find the sniper in a small room.]
AVALANCHE
Shit! I’ve been found!
I’ve never lost a gun
fight before. Let’s go!
[FIGHT: AVALANCHE [x1]
You hear a voice from
outside. It is President Shinra. He sounds distressed.]
President
Shinra
Get away from me!
Wha-?!
[You run to look
outside the window. President Shinra is standing just outside the entrance to
the building. The remaining guard is standing in front of him. They are
surrounded by three AVALANCHE members.]
The President?! I’ve
got to hurry!
[You run back out into
the corridors. Meanwhile, AVALANCHE has dispatched the guard. Just as you make
it to the entrance, you bump into President Shinra, who is running from
AVALANCHE.]
Mr. President?!
President
Shinra
The guard’s been
killed.
Mr. President, please
wait here. I’ll take care of them at once.
[FIGHT: AVALANCHE [x3]]
Sir, it’s all clear.
President Shinra
All right. We’re going
again.
[You begin walking down
the street again. It’s not long before you see AVALANCHE up ahead of you. You
turn around – they’re behind you, too. You must now protect the President from
getting attacked from either side.]
Mr. President! I’ll
deal with them straight away.
[FIGHT: AVALANCHE [x8
total]
You arrive at the Junon
branch office.]
We’re finally here.
(Thought) Only a little further until we get to the press room.
[End of Chapter 2.2.]
[Inside the hotel]
President
Shinra
They’ve been told we’re
coming.
[The PHS rings.]
Veld
Don’t let your guard down
until this meeting is over. I’m giving you the duty of guarding the President.
Player
Understood.
[Two guards come down the
hallway to meet you.]
Guard A
This way, please.
President Shinra
Hm. (5)
[The party walks down the
corridor and comes to a stop just outside the conference room.]
Guard B
It’s this way to the
conference room, Mr. President.
President Shinra
Hm.
[President Shinra enters the
room. You start forward to follow him in but the guard speaks to you.]
Guard B
I have a message for you from
your boss. He wants you to watch the entrance to the hotel to make sure nobody
gets in.
Player
…I understand.
[You leave the area. The two
guards enter the conference room. Two more guards come from hidden areas in the
corridors. One guard keeps watch at the door to the conference room. You head
toward the entrance of the hotel and come across incapacitated Junon guards.]
Player
!! Who did this to you?
Guard
They’re fakes… The
President is in danger…
Oh no!
[Back in the press
room, the three fake guards are standing in front of President Shinra, blocking
the exit.]
President
Shinra
!! You… tricked me.
AVALANCHE
Down with the Shin-Ra!
[They reveal themselves
to be AVALANCHE operatives. You must now make your way back to the press room,
fighting any AVALANCHE sentries you see along the way.

You enter the press
room, catching the AVALANCHE specials by surprise.]
Mr. President!
President
Shinra
Get them!
Yes, sir.
[FIGHT: AVALANCHE

President
Shinra
I won’t stand for this…
But the public is on our side.
Yes, sir.
[Reno
enters the press room.]
Reno
Sorry I’m late.
Reno!
Thank goodness…

[President Shinra is
speaking. He is presumably broadcasting his speech on TV. You and
Reno
stand off on either side of him, out of view of the camera.]
President
Shinra
The Junon army is a
people’s army. They’re here to serve and protect you all. Therefore…
Reno
(To you) Looks like
everything is going to be all right.
That’s a relief.
[Suddenly, the power
goes out.]
Reno
Huh? A blackout?!
Rookie! Stay close to the President.
All right. (Thought) My
eyes are staring to adjust to the dark.
[A little spot of light
around you appears – this is your field of vision. A PHS rings.]
Veld
There’s been a bit of
trouble with one of the Mako generators on your floor. Is the President safe?
Reno
Everything’s all right
on this end.
Veld
Reno,
you stay there with the President. Get Rosalind to go and isolate the problem
with the generator. It’s located on the lower right hand area further in the
building. I’ll guide her through the corridors as she goes along.
Reno
Hey, Rookie! You heard
the boss man.
Player
Yes, sir.
[You head down the
passage, Veld guiding you on the way. You run into AVALANCHE members along the
way and must fight in the dark. When you get there, you hit the switch. We cut
back to the press room.]
Reno
!!
[A man dressed in light
coloured fatigues is at the entrance to the press room.]
Fuhito
It seems as if they
were able to restore the power faster than I anticipated. But, that shouldn’t
pose too much of a problem. After all, we’ve stopped President Shin-Ra from
airing what I’m sure was a heartwarming speech.
Reno
AVALANCHE?!
Fuhito
Heh heh. Right on the
mark. You’ve already remembered our name, then.
[He takes a step
forward.
Reno
dashes forward to head him off.]
Reno
Don’t move!
Fuhito
Oh, please. There’s no
need to rush. My name is Fuhito. I don’t believe we’ve met in person before.
[Cut to the generator
room. Your PHS rings.]
Veld, it looks as if
AVALANCHE cut the power to this floor.
Veld
That’s not good. Get
back to the President as quickly as you can.
Understood.
[You run back toward
the press room.]
Reno
This guy looks a bit
tough.
Fuhito
Heh heh heh. I’ll take
that as a compliment. I’m glad we were able to have this little chat together.
Unfortunately, this is where we must part ways.
[You rush into the
room.]
Wait!
Reno
Good timing! I’m going
to take the President somewhere safe. You keep Fuhito busy.
All right. I’ll try my
best.
[Reno
and President Shinra escape through a hidden back door.
FIGHT: Fuhito. He moves
incredibly fast and uses normal gun attacks as well as a kind of ray gun attack
if you let him get too far away from you.]
Fuhito
What’s this? Are you
tired already? Well, if you’ll excuse me then, I’ll take my leave.
Wait…
Fuhito
Heh heh heh. Please,
don’t fret. The day you take your last breath surely approaches. I will ensure
that. In the meantime, please, enjoy the fireworks show we’ve got planned for
you all. I’m sure you’ll find it most delightful.
Fireworks… show?
Fuhito
Please understand that
I only have the very best of intentions. Well, do take care.
[Fuhito makes his
escape. Your PHS rings.]
Veld
We’ve got an emergency
situation. AVALANCHE has seized the Mako cannon (6).
!!
Veld
Go there at once. If
they fire the cannon, it’ll destroy Headquarters and Midgar city in one shot.
(Thought) So that’s
what Fuhito meant by “fireworks show”. I’ve got to stop it.
[Reno
and President Shinra arrive in the President’s hotel room. The large monitor on
the wall sounds.]
Reno
You’ve got a call on
video phone, sir.
???
It looks like you’re
having some trouble there, doesn’t it, old man. I’ve been watching from the
closed circuit feed. You’re all right?
President
Shinra
Oh. Rufus. It’s been a
while since I’ve heard from you.
Rufus
Hmph. Anyway,
Reno.
I’ve been watching your new Turk in action. She’s not bad. What’s her name?
Reno
Rosalind. She just
started today, sir.
Rufus
I’ll remember that.
Tell her that I look forward to seeing her in action again. (7)
[The video phone rings
again.]
Veld
Sir, we’ve got an
emergency situation. The Junon cannon’s been seized.
President
Shinra
What did you say?! They
think they can do whatever they want… Veld. I want you to move the security
system from A to S.
Veld
Yes, sir.
President
Shinra
(To
Reno)
Head out to the Mako cannon. Get it back, no matter what.
Reno
Roger that.
President
Shinra
Those annoying vermin…
I won’t let them have their way! There’s no way they can take my Midgar away
from me!
[Fuhito enters the
President’s room.]
President
Shinra
!!
Fuhito
Heh heh. So we meet
again, President Shinra. There’s no need to fear. Your death will release your
soul into the Lifestream and help this planet. This won’t hurt very much. I
promise you, it will be over soon.
[He shoots President
Shinra. Outside, AVALANCHE has gathered in the street.]
AVALANCHE
We’re heading to the
cannon.
[They move out. In
another cutscene, both your player and
Reno
come out of different buildings and meet up on the street.]
Reno
Oi, rookie. You ready?
Yes.
Reno
Good. Then we’re going.
[You both head for the
Mako cannon. The scene cuts to the President’s room. The videophone sounds. It
is Veld.]
Veld
Sir! Mr. President!
President
Shinra
I’m… not dead yet.
I’ll… get them… Sephiroth… Call Sephiroth!
[Cut scene to a barren,
rocky wasteland. A Behemoth is lying on the ground, dead. There is a giant
indent where it has impacted with the ground. Some distance away, a silver
haired man carrying a long sword stands. The sound of a PHS ringing cuts through
the dry air.]
