Story
Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wings (ファイナルファンタジーXII
レヴァナント・ウィング) is a video game for the Nintendo DS, and a sequel of
the role-playing game Final Fantasy XII. The game features Final Fantasy
XII characters Vaan, now an 18-year-old air pirate with his own airship, and
Penelo, Vaan's 17-year-old navigator. Their treasure-hunting adventures take
them to the floating continent of Bluvalma and the ground below, where their
story begins. Other returning characters from Final Fantasy XII, such as
Balthier and Fran, are also playable, along with a few new faces.
The game will be directed and plotted by Motomu Toriyama, who also directed
Final Fantasy X-2 and Final Fantasy XIII. According to Toriyama,
the game is aimed at Nintendo DS owners who are not experienced with Final
Fantasy games, and will remove "overly complicated elements from the battle
system...that will allow (the player) to defeat the enemies with minimal
controls." Like with Final Fantasy X-2, the airship will be available to
the player as soon as the game starts.
The game will feature a sprite-based graphics engine with prerendered
backgrounds and character designs by Ryuma Itou (Final Fantasy Tactics
Advance).
Preliminary reports on the battle system have indicated that the game will
have a modified version of Final Fantasy XII's Active Dimension Battle
system; however, it can be played entirely with the stylus. Like in FFXII,
battles initiate once the party comes in contact with the enemy, and the
characters will attack automatically. The player will be given the option to use
the stylus to give commands to the characters by tapping on them with the
stylus. It will be possible to change their target, set gambits, use various
abilities, and more. Area spells can be cast by drawing a rectangle around the
enemy with the stylus. Espers will return in Revenant Wings and will have
a larger role than in Final Fantasy XII; Toriyama has said Revenant
Wings will have more summons than any previous Final Fantasy game.
Review
So far from the trailers presented at the Jump Festa and the promotional
screenshots released, we can tell that it is going to be a success. Even thought
the gameplay is going to be simplified, it appears that graphics and colour are
at Square Enix's best. All the shots have a final fantasy ix feel to them, it is
very bright and vibrant, but at the same time, is realistic, much like Final
Fantasy XII. Music appears to be of a similar score to FFXII, but we are told
that there will be some new tracks in its soundtrack. As of the simplified
Gameplay, it's going to probably appeal to a wider market, hopefully increasing
SE sales. Check back soon for more details once more footage and images have
been released.
